Warming Up: Sun Salutations with a Dance Twist
Before we dive into the dance-inspired poses, let's warm up with a unique take on the classic Sun Salutation sequence. This dance-inspired version will help you get your heart pumping and your body ready for the fun ahead.
1. Mountain Pose (Tadasana) to Reach Up - Begin standing tall like a mountain, then reach your arms up to the sky, fingers wide, as if you're reaching for the stars. Feel your body lengthening and your heart opening.
2. Arms Out to the Sides to Cactus Arms - Bring your arms out to the sides at shoulder height, then bend your elbows to 90 degrees, forming cactus arms. Shake them out, releasing any tension.
3. Forward Fold (Uttanasana) to Twist - Fold forward from your hips, keeping a slight bend in your knees. Then, twist to the right, bringing your left elbow to your right knee, and look up. Repeat on the other side.
4. Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) to Dance - From forward fold, plant your hands on the mat and step back into downward-facing dog. Here's where we add a dance twist: start to bounce gently, lifting one leg at a time, like a playful puppy.
Repeat this sequence 3-5 times, flowing from one pose to the next with your breath.
Dance Pose Yoga: Express Yourself!
Now that we're warmed up, let's explore some amazing dance-inspired yoga poses that'll help you express yourself and find your inner dancer.
Arabesque to Warrior III
Beginner's tip: Use a wall or chair for support if needed.
- Stand tall in mountain pose, then lift your right leg behind you, keeping your hips square and your torso upright. Reach your arms out to the sides at shoulder height, forming a beautiful arabesque. - Next, hinge forward from your hips, extending your right leg behind you as you lower your torso parallel to the mat. Reach your arms forward, finding balance in Warrior III. Hold for 5 breaths, then repeat on the other side.
Attitude Pose to Crescent Lunge
Challenge yourself by trying a half-lift in attitude pose.
- From downward-facing dog, step your right foot forward between your hands, coming into a low lunge. Lift your left heel off the mat, bringing your knee to a 90-degree angle, and reach your arms up, framing your face in attitude pose. - Keeping your back leg engaged, lift your left knee up toward the sky, finding a half-lift in attitude pose. Then, lower your left knee back down, straightening your leg as you lift your torso upright, coming into crescent lunge. Repeat on the other side.
Revolved Chair Pose to Twisted Chair
Beginner's tip: Use a block or chair for support if needed.
- From mountain pose, sit back as if you're sitting in an imaginary chair, keeping your knees stacked over your ankles. Reach your arms up, finding revolved chair pose. - Twist to the right, bringing your right elbow to the outside of your left knee, and look over your right shoulder. Hold for 5 breaths, then return to center and repeat on the other side.
Cool Down: Dance-Floor Flow
As we cool down, let's enjoy a slow, dance-like flow that'll help you find balance and grace.
1. Tree Pose (Vrksasana) to Eagle Arms - From mountain pose, shift your weight to your left foot and bring the sole of your right foot to rest on your left inner thigh, knee, or ankle – wherever you can comfortably reach. Lift your arms up, finding tree pose. - Cross your right elbow over your left, bringing your palms together in eagle arms. Gaze softly ahead, finding balance and focus. After 5 breaths, release and repeat on the other side.
2. Warrior II to Reverse Warrior - From downward-facing dog, step your right foot forward between your hands, coming into warrior II. Square your hips to the side, extending your arms out like wings. - Then, shift your hips back, bringing your right arm up and your left arm down, finding reverse warrior. Hold for 5 breaths, then repeat on the other side.
3. Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana) to Seated Forward Fold - From downward-facing dog, bring your right knee forward, placing it behind your right wrist with your ankle somewhere in front of your left hip. Extend your left leg behind you, lowering your torso down to the mat in pigeon pose. - After 5 breaths, fold forward over your right leg, finding a seated forward fold. Repeat on the other side.
Savasana: Dance in the Dark
Finally, let's end our dance pose yoga journey with a well-deserved Savasana. Lie on your back, arms by your sides, palms facing up. Close your eyes and let your body melt into the mat. Allow your breath to become soft and steady, and let your mind drift like a dancer on the dance floor.
As you lie here, remember that yoga is a practice – and like any other art form, it takes time and patience to master. So, keep dancing, keep exploring, and most importantly, keep having fun!
Namaste, yogis! We hope you enjoyed this dance pose yoga journey. Until next time, keep moving and grooving!
